Picacho State Park in Arizona is probably one of the best places to stop when starting a winter vacation in Arizona. The setting is high on the side of the hill providing a great view of the valley below. For those who are visiting the desert for the first time will find an excellent variety of cacti and other desert shrubs. |

The BLM land near Why, Arizona, provides two weeks of free dry camping. The desert here is very scenic, and safe. |

This group of pictures are all taken at Why, Arizona. Bordering on Organ Pipe National Monument a nearby section of the BLM land has a large number of Organ Pipe cacti mixed with the much taller saguaro cacti, jumping cholla, and many lesser known varieties. |

Poncho Villa in command of troops from Mexico raided the small town of Columbus killing several of the inhabitants. It’s hard to picture the violence of that time when you are camped in the beautiful Poncho Villa State Park with its large trees, and plants. A couple of miles south you reach the Mexican border. Park the car and walk across to visit the old town. The pink building on the main street has an excellent Mexican restaurant. |

Temperatures dropped almost to zero F on this visit to the Grand Canyon. The weather cleared and the next day our walk along the rim of the canyon was spectacular. The upper areas of the plateau were covered with snow, fresh and clean, and very quiet. |
